Install OPNET 14.5 on Windows 7 with Visual Studio 2010

I made a video last year in installing OPNET 14.5 on Windows 7 with  Microsoft Visual Studio 2010

As I don't want to create it again, just I refer it you to. Also, for those who needs the Variables and Paths, I copied them here.

Before installing OPNET, we need:
Installed Windows on computer (As an example, I installed Windows 7 x64 (or 64 bit) on my computer)
Installed Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 ((As an example, I installed Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 x86 (or 32 bit))

What we need before installing OPNET:
Installed Windows on computer (As an example, I installed Windows 7 x64 (or 64 bit) on my computer)
Installed Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 ((As an example, I installed Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 x86 (or 32 bit))

Please note that you can install Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 64bit or 32bit but I installed it in 32bit release while my Windows 7 is 64 bit. So as you can see all of Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 installed path is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0"
We need this path later

What we need for installing OPNET is source of OPNET (We will install these respectively):
modeler_145A_PL8_7808_win.exe
modeler_docs_02-Sep-2008_win.exe
models_145A_PL8_24Sep08_win.exe
OPNET.Modeler.14.5.License.Maker-FFS.exe

We MUST add some variables in system path before running OPNET. I will show you the name and path of variables, then I will add them to System Variables.

Please note when OPNET is installed and educational license is installed, if your Windows is x64 or 64 bit, you will see two exe file for running OPNET which are named:
OPNET Modeler 14.5 (64-Bit)
OPNET Modeler 14.5
Which one you should select to run? It depends on the release of Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 which is installed on your machine. For example I installed Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 x86 or 32-bit on my Windows, so as you see that all of Variables were in " C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio " path, I must run OPNET Modeler 14.5 NOT OPNET Modeler 14.5 (64-Bit).

OK! I think you can now follow the video. I hope it is useful.

sir ,i had followed the steps provided by you but getting error message as.
Unable to load editor configuration file (modeler) because the file could not be found.

please help what to do.

I am also having the same problems as Pramod Sharma

Hi Pramod, Hi Patrick,
Thanks for your comment. Actually I need to know the version of VS and OPNET you are using.
But generally, these types of problem are related to Paths and Variables you have created for OPNET.
Please be sure they are correct, run OPNET as Administrator an let me know what was the result
Thanks

thank you for your guide, I do step by step as you described but like others it failed to load program, but by changing the directory to default "C:/Program Files/OPNET" that problem fixed and the program opened but it failed to simulate one of its tutorial models that an installation guide suggested for being sure of correct installation.
could you tell what is wrong?
thank you
this is that installation guide:

@Mona,

Thanks for your comment.
Please note that OPNET need Visual Studio objects to run and OPNET find these objects, based on Variables and Paths you created in System Variable part. So, you have to say: Hey Mr. OPNET! this is the object's path you need.
So, again based on the version of Visual Studio and Windows you are using, check the variables. I am sure you made a mistake either in creating variables and paths, or running OPNET as administrator

@ Alireza Rezvani

Thank you for your response,

I have Visual Studio installed in the same directory suggested in the installation guide I mentioned in previous comment, "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0"
so all variables should be same as what you said and what that guide says,

this is some errors I faced:

I don't really know what is wrong, I am not expert in defining variables.

fa-golangtraining said...

@Mona,

The errors you mentioned are related to the wrong variables and paths. So, if you are sure that the Variables and Paths in spell are correct may be you should correct the "C:\Program Files" in the paths.

For doing this please note:

1- If your Windows is 32-bit and the Visual studio is 32-bi1
The paths will be "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio...."

2- If your Windows is 64-bit and the Visual studio is 64-bi1
The paths will be "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio...."

3- If your Windows is 64-bit BUT the Visual studio is 32-bi1
The paths will be "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio...."

Also, do not forget running OPNET as Administrator

Thanks for reply,

I got what you say, so my WIN is 64 bit but the VS I installed is 32 ( coz "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0" is the path)
this is the variables I defined but didn't work:

The only thing that comes to mind is your valuables and paths needs to be corrected.
Otherwise, I have no idea

Is there a difference between 14.5 OPNET and OPNET 14.0? I can not find the version 14.5

fa-golangtraining said...

@Максим
In terms of the valuable and paths, I am not sure but probably have. Because there is a big difference between OPNET 12 and OPENT 14.5 so I can guess there is some difference between 14.5 and 14

Hi Alireza,
First I want to appropriate for your useful tutorial in OPNET. I installed OPNET 14.5 on Windows 7 64bit with VS 2010 Professional 32bit.I set Environment Variables based on your inmstruction and checked that the existing directories.
When I try to Run any example in OPNET, it gives following error;

Thanks for your comment. To be honest, have no idea. The only thing that comes to mind is be sure you are running OPNET by administrator permission, if you already have configured the variables and paths in the system settings

hello
i have installed opnet and edit the values but when i want to open the opnet modeler 14.5 i see this error:
cannot enable ETS scripting support due to missing files.
this is likely because "\sys\lib" is not included in the "mod_dirs" preference.
you may proceed without this functionality for now. but certain parts of the program may not behave as documented.
please help me!!!!

Hi,
If you have set the variables correctly, the only thing which comes to mind is be sure you are running the OPNET by Administrator privileged. To do this, right click on OPENT shortcut and select Run as Administrator.

@Kiana
I have encountered the same problem, but I do find some mistakes in setting System Variables. There is an error within the paths of system variabe LIB posted by the host blogger on this page.

"LIB
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VC\atlmfc\lib\;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\include\;C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\DIA SDK\lib\;C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VC\lib\"

The word 'include' should be 'lib'. After I correct it, the OPNET works.
